The History of Herbal Medicine
This module will provide you with an insight in the development of herbal medicine over the centuries from different parts of the world to include Western, Ayurvedic, Chinese and North America herbs. This information will contextualise the modern practice of herbal medicine in the West. This module will also provide an overview of the current clinical and legal situation of the practice of herbal medicine in the UK.
Botany and Herbal Medicine
Before learning about clinical herbal medicine and the herbs themselves, it is important to have an understanding of botany. Doing so will allow you to appreciate the physiology of plants, which in turn allows for the understanding of the differing roles of herbs that come from leaves, flowers, fruits, barks and roots.
The Chemistry of Herbal Medicine
The chemical constituents of botanicals are what provide herbs with their differing clinical and therapeutic properties; for example, why the terpenes in Myrrh give it anti-biotic properties whilst the mucilage in Marshmallow helps to protect the mucous lining of the gut. A detailed understanding of these chemical constituents will acts as the building blocks.
Herbal Vocabulary
Every medical herb has a clinical evidence base to highlight the therapeutic benefits it affords. These benefits are classified into the Herbal Vocabulary. Knowledge of these therapeutic actions is essential to allow the herbalist to know and understand what actions and clinical changes any given herb will induce within the body.
Running a consultation
The clinical success of herbal medicine depends upon two things: 1) Gaining the correct information from the patient about their ailments and then 2) prescribing the correct herbs in the correct format to address these ailments. This module will provide you with the required information and clinical assessment resources needed to conduct clinical consultations with their patients to ensure they are confident in running consultations and collecting all the necessary information required to prescribe effectively.
Formulating Prescriptions
Unlike Western allopathic medicine, herbal medicine uses a synergistic approach to prescribing. Thus rather than simply prescribing a herb to treat symptoms, the aim of herbal prescribing it to 1) restore homeostasis (optimal balance) into the body so that the body’s own healing mechanisms can be mobilised, 2) treat the root cause of the ailment and 3) treat the symptoms of the ailment. Traditional herbal medicine utilises a set formula to achieve this and this module will provide a detailed understanding of how to do so.

There are many different ways of prescribing herbal medicines. This module will provide detailed guidance along with full video tutorials of how to prescribe herbs using powders, capsules, tinctures, ointments, infusions, decoctions, herbal baths, poultices, syrups and herbal honeys along with full dosage information.
